One person is dead and several others are injured following a heavy structure fire in a downtown multi-family dwelling early Wednesday morning.
Firefighters from the St. Joseph Fire Department were dispatched to the scene around 6:00 a.m. Units from Engines 9, 4, and 12, Rescues 1 and 10, Truck 7, and Battalion Chiefs 33 and 43 responded to find the building engulfed in heavy flames.
Crews initiated immediate rescue operations alongside an aggressive fire attack to contain the blaze. Despite their efforts, one individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” the SJFD stated in a release on Facebook.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased or the specific condition of the hospitalized victims.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
